I need a dead one. I bought a computer today that was supposed to have no HDD, but it has a 250 GB SSD and I need something to send back.

All I have is a dead 2.5" drive that I replaced with a SSD. I guess I’m halfway there.

Why do you need to do that? If they sent you a hard drive you didn’t order I don’t think you are obligated to send it back. At least in the USA. So if you don’t want to help why go through the trouble of appearing to help?

I have an old 16GB SSD? Pretty useless as it will barely hold any useful OS install, but it’s a good option for caching a bigger HDD i guess.
I’m not sure i follow you on sending back *some* SSD? Surely they must know what they sent you...

Longer story than that.

I have, thus far, ever had a single SSD die in it’s usable lifespan. This includes drives that are over 10 years old and in continuous use during that time.
Also: This sounds tremendously shady. Why don’t you just give them the drive back?

I bought an Optiplex 980 i5 with 16 gb RAM for $30 from a business and the girl I dealt with was cool and she was supposed to remove the drive before she sold the computer. She forgot to and it turns out to be a 250 GB SSD, which I don’t want to give back. I haven’t admitted to having it so far...

And believe it or not, a “not working, for parts” SSD on Ebay goes for $20.

I’ve got popcorn.

I bought an Optiplex 980 with Core i5 and 16 GB of RAM for $30. The young woman
at the front desk who sold it to me — business unrelated to computer sales, just liquidating some systems they didn’t need — forgot to take out the drive, as it turns out. The drive turns out to be a 250gb SSD, which I hate to give back. So if I could find a “core,” I’d take that back to her. I told her there was no drive because I didn’t see one when we opened the case and the little black SSD was hidden. So if I could find a bad SSD, I’d just take it to her and she could put it in the pile for destruction and not get in any trouble, though she probably won’t anyway.

So did she contact you about it? Because if not, I would guess that no one is even aware of the problem. Sorry, I’m just curious, no real need to answer. I probably think too much.

Yes, she did, though with a question about whether she had and I really don’t want to lie about it so I guess I’ll have to go and do the right thing.

can you just find a super cheap 40g and toss it inside the 250 case?
*I’m making the assumption that it is similar to the one you showed, and that there is an outside cover you can remove.

I’m very close to an equilibrium point where I’ll just give her the SSD and find something else to use. I can’t not be honest about it.
